5 Things to Love About Working in Marketing

by Kevin Strain

According to The Beatles, all you need is love. And for marketers, there are plenty of reasons for us to love our profession. Interestingly, that list of loves is one that often evolves given the dynamic nature of marketing – which in itself might just be a reason to love being a marketer.

Whether you are new to marketing or a seasoned veteran, it’s always good to stop and contemplate some positive aspects of working in your chosen profession. Here are our top reasons to love working in marketing – and we bet you can come up with several more of your own too.

1. Content creation. I’ll kick off the list with one of my own personal favorite things – content creation. Compared to many other jobs, marketing gives you an outlet for your creativity. There are so many different avenues for content creation in marketing like videos, social media imagery and copy, advertising, eBooks, webinars, podcasts and so much more – all of which allow you to create something that has the potential to connect with other people. If you find yourself creating content that people really connect with, your creative ideas can have a significant and real impact on the success of your organization – which is just another thing to love about working in marketing.

2. The human connection. To be successful, marketing is all about the people you are marketing to. Marketers need to find out what appeals to customers and what doesn’t. Not only can this be fascinating, it also allows for a social side of the profession. For those that enjoy communicating with others, marketing has you covered. In addition to communicating with customers, it is also vital to communicate as a team. In order to create effective campaigns, the team must come together with all their ideas and combine them into one.

3. Technology. As the world has evolved, so too have the tools we use to market to customers. Marketing today is dominated by technology. Marketers have access to technology allowing for communication, designing content, measuring results and so much more. In fact, there are more than 8,000 marketing technologies on the market today. While that figure may seem staggering now, the market for marketing technology continues to grow. If you enjoy learning new technologies and seeing the results they can help your marketing programs achieve, being a marketer offers no shortage of opportunities in this area.

4. Digging into data. Much of marketing today revolves around numbers and data. Data from campaigns can be analyzed to figure out what works and what doesn’t work. This can help marketers determine where to strengthen their efforts and what can be cut completely. Digging into data can also help marketing teams make the case for budgets to try new things, which is always an exciting part of the profession too. The availability of data to marketers today also helps eliminate some of the guesswork of the profession’s past. It enables marketing to definitively understand performance and set the stage for success in the present and future.

5. Being needed. Almost every business in the world needs a marketing department. Whether that team is made up of one person or one hundred, know that your skill set means you are and always will be in demand. And you have options too. You could work from a multimillion-dollar corporation or a small mom and pop business – both need marketing expertise. At the end of the day, people are the ones that know other people and that can’t be replaced, meaning marketing is going to be around for a very long time.

Happy Marketing!
